Most of the bathrooms we remodel are not large. What makes them feel tight is rarely the floor area — it is the layout, the light and the number of competing materials.

Commit to one visual line

In a compact room, every horizontal line fights for attention. Continue one tile from floor to ceiling, keep the shower glass frameless and align the mirror with the vanity edge. The eye reads fewer breaks and the room instantly feels bigger.

Use light, then reflect it

A backlit mirror, a small skylight or a transom window above the shower can change a north-facing bathroom completely. Where daylight is impossible, layer wall lights at face height with a warm overhead — the goal is soft, even light rather than a single bright ceiling source.

Layout moves worth considering

  • Swap a swing door for a pocket or sliding door to reclaim floor space.
  • Replace a shower-over-bath with a walk-in shower and a separate drying area.
  • Float the vanity to reveal more floor and make cleaning easier.
  • Move storage into a tall shallow cabinet instead of deep cupboards.

Choose few materials, and choose well

One stone, one timber tone, one metal finish. Fewer materials always read as more expensive, and they are easier to live with. Warm honed stone with a matte finish hides water marks far better than high-gloss porcelain.

A bathroom feels calm when the surfaces forgive you. Matte finishes, mid-tone grout and a textured floor do more than any accent colour.

Waterproofing is the invisible luxury

A properly tanked shower, a slow-falling floor to the drain and correctly sealed penetrations are what let you relax. It is the part of the job no photograph will ever show, and the part we never shortcut.

Ventilate generously

Moisture is the quiet enemy of a small bathroom. A correctly sized extractor fan, timed to run on after showers, protects paint, grout and joinery. Add a window where you can and open it daily.
